The most successful sports car platform in endurance racing history
In short: In the high-stakes world of Le Mans prototypes, one chassis became the de facto standard. Since 2017, the Oreca 07 has dominated its class with over 100 victories, proving that strategic engineering and resource management can create a nearly unbeatable racing blueprint.
The Oreca 07 was born from a strategy of 'future-proofing.' Developed by French manufacturer Oreca to meet the 2017 FIA/ACO LMP2 regulations, it utilized data from its predecessor, the Oreca 05. Rather than a radical departure, the team focused on maximizing performance through optimized energy and resource usage. This approach allowed for a highly competitive car while ensuring that existing Oreca 05 owners could update their vehicles within financial reason.
While sharing the 05's monocoque, the 07 employs a unique aerodynamic concept. Instead of prioritizing massive downforce at the nose, the design focuses on conditioning and accelerating airflow through the sidepods toward the diffuser. Massing 930 kg (2,050 lb), it initially housed a 600 hp 4.2-litre Gibson GK428 V8 motor. To comply with evolving regulations, power was later adjusted—decreased in 2020 to accommodate air restrictors and then increased by 40 hp for the European Le Mans Series.
Such total supremacy forced competitors including Riley/Multimatic, Ligier, and Dallara to develop major modifications for parity. Its influence extends beyond its own branding; it served as the basis for the Acura ARX-05 (a DPi variation with a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6), the Alpine A470, and even the Aurus 01. Even in the higher LMP1 class, a variant known as the Rebellion R13—later rebadged as the Alpine A480—competed against Toyota for four seasons, finishing 2nd overall in every instance.
