How a dispersed farming layout became a high-tech Utah hub
In short: Before it was a bustling suburb of Salt Lake City, Orem was an agricultural district with a unique design. Unlike typical settlements with clustered town blocks, Orem's farmers built homes directly along highways to stay close to their orchards, a layout that paved the way for its modern industrial prosperity.
Formerly called Provo Bench, the location's name changed in 1914 to commemorate Walter C. Orem, who led the Salt Lake and Utah Railroad. This rebranding was part of an effort to attract investment and facilitate the shipping of produce from the region's extensive orchards. The city was officially incorporated on May 5, 1919. Originally, the area was known as Sharon, a name derived from a Biblical description of level land. This name also references the birthplace of Joseph Smith, the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement.
The city's geography is defined by its proximity to Utah Lake—a 150-square-mile remnant of ancient Lake Bonneville—and the Wasatch Mountain range. While the area was founded as an agricultural district, it underwent a significant economic transformation in the 1990s. High-technology manufacturing, software firms, and television-production studios displaced older industries, fueling the region's prosperity. The local landscape is characterized by a low desert environment with an average elevation of 9,956 feet. This region is situated near the eastern shores of Utah Lake and the scenic Wasatch Mountain range.
Today, Orem is a key part of the Provo-Orem Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2020 census, the population reached 98,129, making it the 5th most populous city in Utah. The city is also home to Utah Valley University, one of the nation's few open-enrollment universities, and serves as a major hub for the Salt Lake City metropolitan region. The city's demographic profile shows a median age of 27.2 years. Furthermore, the local economy is supported by various modes of transport, including the FrontRunner train and the Utah Valley Express bus rapid transit.
