Why this New York village changed its name to escape a famous prison's shadow
In short: Perched on the Hudson River, Ossining was once known as Sing Sing. The name change in 1901 was a deliberate effort to distance the community from the notoriety of its local correctional facility. Today, this historic village balances its industrial past with its role as a modern commuter hub.
The village of Ossining, located about 30 miles from New York City, sits on the eastern shore of the Hudson River. Its original name, Sing Sing, was derived from the Sint Sinck Native Americans, a group belonging to the Wappinger Confederacy. The name itself translated to stone upon stone, a reference to the significant marble deposits found throughout the region. In 1813, it became the first village in Westchester County to incorporate, though it was then part of the Town of Mount Pleasant until the Town of Ossining was established in 1845.
The area's history is deeply tied to the Hudson River, which served as a vital artery for shipping farm produce and supporting local boatbuilding industries. By the 19th century, the village had become a center for manufacturing, most notably through Benjamin Brandreth’s successful patent medicine business. However, the presence of the Sing Sing Correctional Facility, which opened in 1828, eventually overshadowed the village's identity. To mitigate the stigma associated with the prison, residents voted to adopt the name Ossining at the turn of the 20th century.
Today, the village is a diverse residential community with a rich architectural legacy. It features numerous sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the historic Sparta neighborhood and the 1760 Jug Tavern. The village also hosts a portion of the Old Croton Aqueduct, a 19th-century masonry structure that once provided New York City with its primary water supply. As a designated Preserve America Community, Ossining continues to preserve its heritage while serving as a bedroom community for the nearby metropolis.
