From a 'place of laughing waters' to a commuter hub
In short: Before it was a bustling village in Nassau County, the land now known as Valley Stream was a woodland area of large farms and squatters' communities. Its transformation from a quiet rural outpost to a dense urban center was driven by a single man's petition and the expansion of the railroad.
The area's history dates back to 1640, when the Dutch West India Company purchased the land from the Rockaway Native Americans, who were part of the Algonquian-speaking Lenape people. The original name, Reckouwacky, suggested a landscape of 'laughing waters' or a 'sandy place.' For nearly two centuries, the region remained largely undeveloped woodland, with the 1840 census recording only about 20 families, most of whom were large-scale farmers.
The village's modern identity was forged in the mid-19th century by Robert Pagan, a Scottish immigrant. Lacking a local post office, residents were forced to travel to Hempstead for mail. Pagan petitioned for a local office and was appointed postmaster; he chose the name 'Valley Stream' in 1843 to reflect the local topography and the Valley Stream Brook. His wife, Ellen, also shaped the community's social fabric by establishing the first local congregation in their farmhouse.
Rapid growth followed the construction of Merrick Road in 1853 and the expansion of the Long Island Rail Road. By the early 20th century, the area became a vacation destination for people from Brooklyn and Queens, eventually leading to its incorporation in 1925. A pivotal moment occurred in 1929 when developer William R. Gibson built the Gibson station specifically to serve white-collar commuters, cementing the village's role as a major residential hub for the New York metropolitan area.
Today, Valley Stream is a fully urbanized community of over 40,000 residents. While it is known for its diverse heritage—including significant Italian, Irish, and German ancestry—it also holds a unique place in American history as the site of the first time a sitting president addressed a Jewish congregation in their house of worship in 1984.
