How a massive cruise ship navigates global seasons and unexpected historical challenges
In short: Ovation of the Seas is a titan of the seas, a Quantum-class vessel that migrates between Seattle and Sydney to chase the summer sun. Beyond its luxury amenities, the ship has navigated complex geopolitical and environmental crises, serving as a floating witness to significant events of the last decade.
Constructed at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, Ovation of the Seas represents the third iteration of Royal Caribbean International's Quantum class. The project, initially codenamed Project Sunshine, saw its first steel cut in September 2014. By the time of its delivery in April 2016, the vessel had become a marvel of modern engineering, featuring a keel composed of 74 individual blocks. Its christening ceremony, held in Tianjin in June 2016, featured Chinese actress Fan Bingbing as the ship's godmother, signaling its strategic importance in the Asian market.
The ship's operational history has been marked by both routine seasonal migrations and profound challenges. In December 2019, the vessel was docked in Tauranga, New Zealand, during the tragic volcanic eruption on White Island. With 38 passengers and crew members present on the island at the time, the ship remained in port for two days to assist with recovery efforts. Shortly thereafter, the global pandemic brought further disruption. In March 2020, the ship became a focal point of international attention when passengers disembarking in Sydney were linked to COVID-19 cases, leading to a period where the vessel remained off the coast of New South Wales while crew members awaited repatriation.
Despite these turbulent chapters, the ship continues to evolve. In March 2026, it underwent a significant amplification at the Seatrium Tuas Shipyard in Singapore. This modernization effort introduced new leisure spaces, including the Pesky Parrot tiki bar and Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen, alongside structural upgrades like the addition of Panoramic and Ultimate Family Suites. Today, the ship remains a prominent member of the Royal Caribbean fleet, ranking as the fourth largest class of cruise ships globally, surpassed only by the Icon, Oasis, and Meraviglia classes.
