How a back injury and a 715 ranking nearly ended a tennis career
In short: In 2012, Pablo Carreño Busta faced a devastating setback. After undergoing back surgery, his singles ranking plummeted to 715. Yet, the Spaniard would eventually climb to world No. 10, even toppling Novak Djokovic on the Olympic stage to claim bronze.
The trajectory of Pablo Carreton Busta’s career is a study in resilience. Born on 12 July 1991, the Spaniard showed early promise, reaching a combined junior world ranking of No. 6 in February 2009. However, his professional ascent was nearly derailed by physical hardship. Following back surgery in 2012, he spent much of the season sidelined, struggling to regain his footing. By the end of that year, his singles ranking had dropped to a lowly 715.
His recovery was marked by a period of intense grit. In early 2013, he won 42 of 43 matches on the ITF Circuit, a run that propelled him through qualifying rounds in Casablanca and Portugal. This momentum led to his Grand Slam debut at the 2013 French Open. By 2017, the climb reached its zenith; he achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 10 on 11 September 2017, following a string of high-level performances, including a Masters 1000 semifinal at Indian Wells.
Beyond the rankings, Carreño Busta has proven his ability to perform in high-stakes moments. He was a key member of the 2019 Davis Cup winning Spanish team and secured an Olympic bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics by defeating world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the bronze medal match. His trophy cabinet also includes seven ATP singles titles, notably the Canadian Open Masters 1000, and four doubles titles, including a victory at the 2020 Cincinnati Masters.
