How a tactical maverick led Greece to an improbable European title
In short: In 2004, Greece entered Euro 2004 as 150–1 outsiders. Yet, through a disciplined defensive strategy that defied modern trends, they stunned the footballing world by winning the championship without conceding a single goal in the knockout stages.
Otto Rehhagel, nicknamed "King Otto" in Greece, is a figure of significant contrast in football history. During his tenure at Werder Bremen from 1981 to 1995, he was celebrated for producing flashy, up-tempo attacking football. However, his success with the Greece national team between 2001 and 2010 relied on a much more pragmatic approach. He utilized a defensive scheme inspired by catenaccio, employing man-to-man marking, a deep defensive line, and a dominant libero to wear down opponents and create counter-attacking opportunities.
This defensive-minded setup, which focused on robustness and height rather than traditional footballing finesse, drew criticism for being dated and anachronistic. Rehhagel, however, defended his methods by arguing that a coach must adapt tactics to the specific characteristics of available players. His success proved the efficacy of his 'kontrollierte Offensive'—or controlled offence—as Greece defeated heavyweights like Portugal, France, and the Czech Republic to secure the title.
Rehhagel's career is marked by extreme highs and lows. He achieved the unprecedented feat of winning the Bundesliga with 1. FC Kaiserslautern in 1998 immediately after their promotion. Conversely, his stint at Bayern Munich was marked by friction and was cut short just four days before a major final. Despite these clashes, he remains the only foreign manager to have ever won a European Championship, cementing his legacy as one of the most important figures in Greek sporting history.
