How the Pac-12 Conference survived a mass exodus to rebuild its historic legacy
In short: After ten of its twelve members departed during a tumultuous realignment period, the Pac-12 Conference was left with only two schools. Rather than dissolving, the historic organization fought for its survival, eventually securing enough new members to preserve its status as a major collegiate athletic conference for the 2026 season.
The Pac-12 traces its roots to 1915, when the Pacific Coast Conference was founded in Portland, Oregon. Over the next century, it evolved through several iterations, including the Athletic Association of Western Universities and the Pacific-10, before adopting the Pac-12 moniker in 2011. Known as the Conference of Champions, it has historically dominated NCAA competition, boasting over 500 national championships—a lead of more than 200 titles over its nearest rival.
The conference's stability shattered during the 2021–2026 realignment cycle. Following the departure of tentpole programs like USC and UCLA to the Big Ten, the conference faced a cascade of exits. By 2023, Oregon State and Washington State were the only remaining members. The two schools successfully sued for control of the conference, preventing departing members from dissolving the league and liquidating its assets. This legal victory allowed the remaining pair to steer the conference through a precarious two-year grace period.
To maintain its official NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision status, the conference needed to reach a minimum of eight football-playing members. Through strategic expansion, the Pac-12 announced the addition of Boise State, Fresno State, Colorado State, San Diego State, Utah State, and Texas State, alongside non-football member Gonzaga. By June 2025, the conference had secured its ninth full member, successfully fulfilling the requirements to preserve its long-standing identity and competitive future starting in the 2026–27 academic year.
