How the Washington Huskies achieved a historic, undefeated run through the Pac-12
In short: In their final year as members of the Pac-12, the Washington Huskies achieved something unseen in over a decade. Led by head coach Kalen DeBoer, the team rewrote the program's record books, navigating a grueling schedule to reach the very brink of a national title.
The 2023 season marked a significant era of transition for the University of Washington. It was the final campaign for head coach Kalen DeBoer, who led the Huskies through his second and final season in Seattle before departing for Alabama. The season also served as the program's farewell to the Pac-12 Conference, as the team prepared to move to the Big Ten in 2024.
On the field, the Huskies delivered a performance of historic proportions. By securing a victory over Washington State, they became the first team to finish undefeated in conference play since the Pac-12 expanded to a 12-team format in 2011. This run included their eighth perfect regular season, the first such feat the program had achieved since 1991.
The team's success was defined by breaking long-standing milestones. With thirteen wins, the 2023 squad set a new program record, surpassing the previous maximum of twelve wins held by the 1991 national champions and the 2016 team. This momentum carried them through the Pac-12 Championship Game, where they defeated the No. 5 Oregon Ducks on December 1, 2023.
The postseason journey concluded with high-stakes matchups in the College Football Playoff. After a 37–31 victory against No. 3 Texas in the Sugar Bowl, the Huskies advanced to the 2024 CFP National Championship. Although they ultimately fell to No. 1 Michigan with a score of 34–13, the season cemented their place in the history of the playoff era.
