The family sedan that became a global automotive marathon runner
In short: Most cars are replaced within a decade, but the Peugeot 405 defied the cycle of obsolescence for thirty-three years. From its record-breaking debut as European Car of the Year to its production in remote regions, it remains one of history's most enduring single-generation vehicles.
Launched in 1987, the Peugeot 405 was an immediate success, securing the title of European Car of the Year in 1988 with a record-breaking number of votes. While it succeeded the long-running Peugeot 305 and replaced the Chrysler Alpine, its engineering was robust enough to sustain a production life that lasted until 2020 under license in Iran. Ranking twentieth among historical single-generation vehicles for longevity, this model's production spanned 33 years until early 2020.
The vehicle's versatility was key to its longevity. It was sold globally as both a saloon and an estate, featuring front-wheel and four-wheel drive configurations. While it shared a floorpan with the Citroën BX, it notably lacked that model's hydropneumatic suspension. In terms of performance, it offered everything from a 1.4-liter engine producing 70 hp to the high-performance Mi16, which could reach top speeds of 220 km/h (137 mph).
The 405 also served as a bridge between eras and continents. It was the final Peugeot sold in the United States before the brand withdrew in 1991. In Argentina, it became an extreme success with over 500,000 units sold. Furthermore, its platform provided the foundation for Iran's 'national car,' the Samand, creating a lineage that connects modern Iranian roads back to the Rootes Group and Chrysler UK of the 1960s.
Technological evolution was subtle but significant. The 1992 Phase II update introduced bonded windscreens and redesigned interiors inherited from the larger 605, significantly increasing torsional rigidity. Despite these deep structural changes, the design remained nearly indistinguishable from its predecessor, a testament to the enduring appeal of its original silhouette.
