Why Pharrell Williams chose to tell his life story through the medium of Lego
In short: Pharrell Williams rejected the traditional biopic format, opting instead for a genre-defying animated documentary. By visualizing his career through Lego bricks, he aimed to capture his unique synesthesia and the way he perceives the world: as a series of pre-existing materials waiting to be built into something entirely new.
Directed by Morgan Neville, the 2024 film Piece by Piece chronicles the life of Pharrell Williams, from his upbringing in the Atlantis housing projects of Virginia Beach to his global success as a musician and producer. Williams, who has synesthesia, describes his creative process as seeing colors in music. He pitched the idea of an animated biography to Neville in 2019, specifically requesting an imaginative approach that avoided the tropes of standard celebrity documentaries. The production, which spanned six years, involved close collaboration with The Lego Group to develop more inclusive minifigure skin tones and new pieces representing music equipment like turntables and boomboxes.
The film features interviews with numerous collaborators, including Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, and Gwen Stefani, all rendered as Lego versions of themselves. These segments, recorded largely during the COVID-19 pandemic, are interspersed with live-action footage and animated reenactments of key career moments. These include the formation of The Neptunes with Chad Hugo, the creation of hits like Drop It Like It's Hot, and the global phenomenon of the song Happy. The narrative also touches on Williams's personal growth, his marriage to Helen Lasichanh, and his reflections on social issues like police brutality.
Critical reception has been generally positive, with reviewers praising the film's visual inventiveness and its ability to breathe new life into the documentary format. While some critics noted a degree of hagiographic evasiveness common in celebrity biographies, others lauded the film as a vibrant, kaleidoscopic testament to self-belief. The film premiered at the 51st Telluride Film Festival in August 2024 and grossed $10.7 million worldwide. Ultimately, the project serves as a meta-commentary on Williams's philosophy: that life, much like a Lego set, is a process of taking disparate pieces and building them into something better.
The film's release was marked by both promotional innovation and unexpected disruption. A dedicated Lego Minifigure Generator was launched to engage fans, while screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival were interrupted by PETA protesters targeting Williams's fashion work. Despite these moments, the film maintains a focus on Williams's creative evolution, concluding with a concert performance of the title track, Piece by Piece, reinforcing his thesis that the possibilities for creation are endless.
