In short: Michelangelo’s Pietà is a masterpiece of Renaissance marble, yet it remains the only work the artist ever signed. After overhearing a visitor attribute his creation to another sculptor, a prideful Michelangelo carved his name across Mary’s sash. He later regretted this outburst, swearing never to sign his work again.

Commissioned in the late 15th century for a French cardinal's funeral chapel, the Pietà represents the moment Jesus is returned to his mother after the Crucifixion. Michelangelo’s interpretation was revolutionary for its time, balancing naturalism with classical beauty. He famously depicted Mary as remarkably young, a choice he defended by suggesting that chaste women retain their freshness longer than others. This aesthetic was likely influenced by Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, specifically the lines in Paradiso describing the Virgin as the daughter of her own son.

The sculpture’s history is marked by both reverence and trauma. In 1972, a man attacked the statue with a hammer, causing significant damage to Mary’s arm, nose, and eyelid. Restoration required using marble taken from the back of the statue to reconstruct missing features. Today, the work is protected by bulletproof glass, a far cry from its 1964 journey to the New York World's Fair, where it was transported in a specialized, buoyant crate to ensure its safety during the voyage.

Beyond the physical damage, the statue has undergone various modifications over the centuries. In 1637, Pope Urban VIII granted it a canonical coronation, and a diadem was added to the figures. Later, in 1736, a sculptor named Giuseppe Lirioni restored four fingers on Mary’s left hand, a move that modern scholars still debate for its potential artistic liberties. Despite these interventions, the statue remains a singular testament to Michelangelo's skill, standing as the only piece he ever formally claimed with his signature.
