In short: Long before modern warships, indigenous Philippine sailors mastered the seas with sophisticated outrigger vessels. Today, the Philippine Navy operates as a vital branch of the Armed Forces, protecting maritime interests across the archipelago. Its history spans centuries of revolutionary struggle, guerrilla warfare, and a transformation into a modern maritime force.

The naval heritage of the Philippines predates colonial arrival, with ancient inhabitants utilizing advanced vessels like the balangay for trade and warfare. Indigenous warships, such as the Karakoa, were formidable craft, sometimes carrying over a hundred rowers and equipped with lantaka cannons. These maritime traditions persisted through the centuries, as Luzones mercenaries and sailors became influential figures across Southeast Asia, serving in fleets from Malacca to the Moluccas and even aiding in the defense of Ayuthaya.

The modern Philippine Navy traces its formal roots to the 1898 Philippine Revolution, where revolutionaries captured and refitted Spanish steam launches to form a nascent fleet. Following the American occupation, the service underwent significant reorganization. During World War II, the Offshore Patrol, known as the 'Mosquito Fleet,' gained renown for its courageous hit-and-run tactics against superior Japanese forces using small, high-speed PT boats. By the end of the war, a remarkable 66 percent of its personnel had received decorations for gallantry.

Post-war, the service was elevated to a major command in 1947 and officially designated the Philippine Navy in 1951. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, it expanded its capabilities, including the formation of a marine battalion and a naval aviation arm. While the 1970s saw a strategic shift toward internal counter-insurgency operations, the Navy remains a critical component of national defense, managing a fleet of 96 combat vessels and 21 support craft to secure the nation's maritime borders and interests.
