The tragic trajectory of PnB Rock from Philadelphia streets to a Los Angeles tragedy
In short: Rakim Hasheem Allen, known as PnB Rock, rose from a difficult Philadelphia upbringing to become a prominent voice in modern hip-hop. Despite achieving commercial success and chart-topping albums, his life was abruptly cut short during a 2022 robbery in Los Angeles, sparking a complex and lengthy legal aftermath.
Born in 1991, Rakim Hasheem Allen grew up in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia. His early life was marked by hardship, including the loss of his father at age three and periods of incarceration during his youth. He eventually adopted the moniker PnB Rock as a tribute to the intersection of Pastorius and Baynton streets near his childhood home. His musical career began to take shape while he was serving a 33-month prison sentence, during which he penned his debut mixtape, Real N*gga Bangaz.
By 2015, Allen had signed with Atlantic Records, setting the stage for his breakout success. His 2016 single, Selfish, earned triple platinum status and secured his place on the Billboard Hot 100. He was recognized as part of the 2017 XXL Freshman Class and continued to collaborate with high-profile artists like Ed Sheeran and XXXTentacion. His second studio album, TrapStar Turnt PopStar, reached the top of the Billboard 200 in 2019, cementing his status as a significant figure in the industry.
The trajectory of his life ended on September 12, 2022, when he was fatally shot during a robbery at a restaurant in South Los Angeles. The subsequent investigation revealed that the perpetrators were alerted to his location by an associate, debunking initial theories that social media posts had compromised his safety. In August 2024, Freddie Lee Trone was convicted of first-degree murder, robbery, and conspiracy, receiving a life sentence in September 2024. The legal proceedings continued into 2026, when an appeals court upheld the conviction, noting the significant danger created by involving his son in the crime.
