In short: After a violent brawl led to a prison sentence, frontman Ronnie Radke transformed a period of incarceration into the foundation for his next musical chapter. His journey from being ousted from Escape the Fate to topping rock charts involves legal battles, public feuds, and a radical shift in musical identity.

Ronnie Radke's career has been defined by extreme highs and lows. In 2008, he was removed from the post-hardcore group Escape the Fate following a prison sentence for violating probation. This sentence stemmed from an incident in May 2006, where a brawl involving Radke resulted in the death of 18-year-old Michael Allen Cook. While the district attorney declined to prosecute Radke for murder, citing self-defense, he was convicted of battery with substantial bodily harm and illegal possession of brass knuckles. As part of his sentence, he was ordered to pay $92,372 in restitution to the victim's mother, Ceda Freeman.

Radke utilized his time in High Desert State Prison to develop the concept for a new project, originally called From Behind These Walls. This evolved into the band Falling in Reverse, which released its debut album, The Drug in Me Is You, on July 26, 2011. The band achieved significant commercial success, with several albums reaching the US top 20 and all four reaching the top 40. In 2020, the single "Popular Monster" secured his first number one on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.

His career has been marked by recurring legal and personal friction. In 2012, Radke faced charges of assault after throwing microphone stands into an audience during a performance at Six Flags Great Adventure. In 2024, he faced further legal challenges when a defamation lawsuit against critic Anthony Fantano was dismissed under anti-SLAPP statutes. His complex personal history includes a 2018 reflection on how a lack of a mother figure affected his maturity, a sentiment he later countered by citing the positive influence of fatherhood.
