In short: Polaris didn't start as an automotive giant; it began with a prototype built by employees using a grain silo conveyor belt and a Chevy bumper. This unauthorized project nearly cost the founder his company before it became a global leader in off-road power.

The origins of Polaris are rooted in industrial improvisation. In 1954, while owner Edgar Hetteen was away on business, employees David Johnson and Paul Knochenmus created a prototype vehicle to make hunting locations more accessible through deep snow. This crude machine utilized a grain silo conveyor belt for tracks and an old Chevy bumper for skis. Hetteen was initially furious that company resources were diverted to the project and sold the first unit, known as the No. 1 sled, to local lumberyard owner "Silver Pete" H.F. Peterson for $465 just to cover payroll.

The brand's trajectory shifted when Allan Hetteen took the lead on a second model, the Polaris Sno Traveler. The first production model hit the assembly line in Minnesota in 1956. These early machines were massive, weighing nearly 1,000 lb (450 kg) and reaching speeds of about 20 mph (32 km/h). In 1960, Edgar Hetteen demonstrated the machine's dependability by guiding a 1,200-mile journey through Alaska's wild terrain using three snowmobiles. While the trip garnered front-page news, it caused friction with the local bank board, leading to Hetteen leaving the company to start a competitor that eventually became Arctic Cat.

Today, Polaris Inc. is a diversified powerhouse headquartered in Medina, Minnesota. The company has expanded far beyond snowmobiles into ATVs (introducing the Scrambler ATC in 1985), motorcycles (acquiring Indian Motorcycle in 2011), and even boats via an $805 million purchase of Boat Holdings LLC in 2018. While it maintains deep roots in Roseau, Minnesota, for engineering and assembly, it has strategically expanded manufacturing to Mexico and Alabama to optimize production costs and global reach.
