The engineering of Pune's elevated lifeline: the Pink Line
In short: Pune is expanding its urban footprint with a 23.3 km elevated metro corridor. Designed to link the city's IT hubs with its historic core, the Pink Line represents a massive logistical undertaking involving complex geotechnical investigations, multi-phase construction, and a high-stakes public-private partnership.
The Pink Line, also known as Pune Metro Line 3, is a 23.3 km (14.5 mi) completely elevated transit network. It is designed to connect District Court in Pune to Megapolis Pune in Hinjawadi. At the District Court interchange station, the route connects with Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) tracks to facilitate smooth integration. Tata Realty-Siemens, a joint venture granted the contract on 3 October 2018, is managing the project via a design, build, finance, operate, and transfer framework.
Construction is structured into two primary phases. The initial stage encompasses a 12-station stretch spanning from Maan Metro Station to R.K. Laxman Museum (Balewadi). This section recently received approval from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) for passenger operations following successful safety validations and trial runs. The second phase will complete the remaining stretch toward Shivajinagar. To support the fleet, a metro car shed and depot will be established in Hinjawadi, utilizing 55 acres (22 ha) of land provided by the MIDC.
The project faced significant hurdles, including a nearly 11-month work stoppage due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with piling works only resuming in May 2020. Looking ahead, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has proposed a major extension toward Hadapsar. This expansion, currently being prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, could add another 8.5 km (5.3 mi) to the line, potentially adding 4 to 5 new stations to the network.
