The rookie who shattered Marc Márquez's long-standing racing records
In short: In the high-stakes world of MotoGP, few riders transition from newcomer to record-breaker as swiftly as Raúl Fernández. By dismantling one of the sport's most iconic legacies in a single season, he proved that elite speed can be forged through rapid, methodical progression.
Raúl Fernández González’s ascent to the pinnacle of motorcycle racing is defined by a meteoric rise through the ranks. Born in 2000, his journey began with the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup in 2015, where he secured several podium finishes before becoming the FIM CEV Moto3 Junior World Champion in 2018. His path was not immediate; it involved strategic wild-card entries for the Mahindra Aspar Team in 2017 and 2018, which served as a proving ground for his ability to handle different machinery.
The turning point came during his tenure with the Red Bull KTM Ajo team. In 2020, he secured two victories and finished fourth in the Moto3 standings. However, it was his promotion to the Moto2 class that cemented his place in history. During the 2021 season, Fernández produced what is considered the best rookie campaign ever in that category. He won eight races—including victories in Portugal, France, and the USA—and secured seven pole positions. In doing so, he surpassed Marc Márquez's previous record for rookie wins.
Fernández achieved a rare feat of rapid promotion, becoming only the third rider to jump from Moto2 to MotoGP after just one season, joining the ranks of Maverick Viñales and Joan Mir. After competing for Tech3 KTM Factory Racing in 2022 and RNF Racing in 2023, he joined SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP Team. His career reached a new milestone in 2025 with his first MotoGP win at the Australian Grand Prix, followed by a second victory at the British Grand Prix in August 2026.
His trajectory highlights a specific evolution of talent: moving from wild-card appearances to junior championships, then to dominant rookie seasons that broke established benchmarks. By securing a multi-year contract with Trackhouse for 2027 and 2028, Fernández has solidified his status as a mainstay in the premier class.
