Can a single connection transcend the boundaries of life and death?
In short: In the 2017 Indian fantasy drama Raabta, a chance encounter in Budapest triggers memories of a tragic, ancient past. While critics were divided on its execution, the film explores the heavy weight of reincarnation, where star-crossed lovers are hunted by the shadows of their previous lives.
Directed by Dinesh Vijan in his directorial debut, Raabta follows Shiv Kakkar, a banker from Amritsar who moves to Budapest for work. There, he meets Saira Singh, a chocolatier haunted by drowning nightmares. The narrative weaves a complex web of reincarnation, linking the modern pair to the ancient figures of Saiba, a warrior princess, and Jilaan, a warrior who was killed by a jealous rival named Qaabir.
The film's plot is driven by the interference of Zakir, a man who claims to be the reincarnation of the murderous Qaabir. By presenting paintings from a past life, Zakir triggers Saira's suppressed memories of her existence as Saiba. This cycle of violence threatens to repeat itself, leading to a final confrontation in the ocean where the past and present collide.
Despite its ambitious premise, the film's reception was highly polarized. While Bollywood Hungama praised its beautiful locales and cinematography, other critics were far less kind. Rajeev Masand gave it a 1/5 star rating, calling it 'singularly pointless,' and India Today described it as a 'comet-crossed romance' that missed its target. Commercially, the film struggled, grossing approximately ₹39 crore worldwide.
The production itself faced its own drama, including a legal challenge from the producer of Magadheera, which the courts resolved in favor of Raabta on 8 June 2017. The film's musical landscape was equally layered, featuring a soundtrack by Pritam and JAM8, including a remake of the song 'Raabta' from the 2012 film Agent Vinod.
