A Peruvian industrialist and politician who embraces the nickname Porky to protest national corruption
In short: Rafael López Aliaga is a prominent figure in Peruvian politics, known for his far-right platform and his background as a businessman. From his rise as mayor of Lima to his controversial presidential campaigns, he has consistently challenged the political establishment while maintaining a deeply conservative, religious, and polarizing public image.
Born in 1961, Rafael López Aliaga transitioned from a career in banking and railway finance into national politics. After serving on the Lima City Council starting in 2007, he took control of the National Solidarity party in 2019. He later refounded this organization as Popular Renewal, a party that emphasizes neoliberal economic policies alongside a staunchly conservative social agenda. His political identity is heavily influenced by his membership in Opus Dei, and he has openly discussed his commitment to celibacy, which he maintains through self-flagellation.
López Aliaga’s career is marked by significant controversy and unconventional campaign tactics. He is widely recognized by the nickname Porky, a moniker he adopted to mock the systemic corruption he claims plagues Peru. His rhetoric often draws comparisons to other right-wing leaders in the Americas, and he has signed the Madrid Charter alongside figures like Javier Milei and Eduardo Bolsonaro. His policy proposals have included the privatization of social programs, the elimination of various government ministries, and a hardline approach to crime that involves deploying the military to patrol urban streets.
His electoral performance has been varied. In 2022, he won the mayorship of Lima with 26.35% of the vote, a victory notable for being the lowest percentage for any winning candidate in the capital's history since 1963. His 2021 and 2026 presidential bids were unsuccessful, with the latter resulting in his election to the Senate. Throughout his time in the public eye, he has faced numerous investigations, including allegations related to tax evasion and money laundering, while his public statements—ranging from his views on abortion to his rhetoric regarding political opponents—have frequently drawn sharp criticism from human rights groups and media outlets.
