The Republic of China Air Force pioneered the first air-to-air missile kill in history.
In short: Tracing its origins to 1920, the Republic of China Air Force evolved from a fragmented collection of warlord units into a modern military branch. Beyond its role in World War II, it achieved a historic milestone during the Taiwan Strait Crisis, forever changing the nature of aerial combat with new technology.
The Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF) traces its lineage to 1920, when the Kuomintang established an aviation department within the National Revolutionary Army. Throughout the 1930s, the force consolidated various provincial air units to counter Japanese aggression. By the Second Sino-Japanese War, it operated a diverse fleet of international aircraft, including Curtiss Hawk IIIs and Soviet-supplied Polikarpov fighters. Despite facing significant technological disadvantages against the Imperial Japanese Air Force, the ROCAF conducted notable operations, such as the 1938 long-range leaflet raid over Japanese cities, which served as an early form of psychological warfare.
Following the nationalist retreat to Taiwan in 1949, the ROCAF became a critical component of the United States' Cold War defense perimeter. Its structure was heavily modeled after the United States Air Force, and it received extensive equipment support under the Sino-American Mutual Defense Treaty. During the First Taiwan Strait Crisis, the ROCAF engaged communist forces and secured 32 aerial victories. Among these was a historic achievement: an ROCAF F-86 Sabre pilot recorded the first successful air-to-air missile kill in military history using an experimental AIM-9 Sidewinder.
Today, the ROCAF focuses on the defense of Taiwan's airspace through advanced surveillance and hardened infrastructure. Its operational capabilities include a sophisticated network of long-range radar sites, such as the PAVE PAWS early warning system, and a robust missile command. The force maintains a complex organizational structure, including air defense brigades equipped with Patriot PAC-3 and indigenous Sky Bow missile systems. As it continues to modernize, the ROCAF prioritizes the integration of C4ISTAR systems and next-generation fighters to ensure battle effectiveness against potential threats.
