From the battlefield to the royal court: the political ascent of Baron Benyon
In short: A former British Army officer and long-serving MP, Richard Benyon has transitioned from the front lines of the Royal Green Jackets to one of the most prestigious roles in the Royal Household. His journey through parliamentary controversy and ministerial power offers a glimpse into the complexities of modern British political life.
Born in Reading in 1960, Richard Ben לו Benyon's career is marked by a blend of military service and high-level politics. After training at Sandhurst, he served as a second lieutenant in the Royal Green Jackets, with postings in Northern Ireland and the Far East before moving into the Army Reserve in 1984. His political roots run deep; he is the great-great-grandson of the former Prime Minister Lord Salisbury.
Benyon first entered Parliament as the MP for Newbury in 2005, following several unsuccessful attempts in 1997 and 2001. His tenure in the House of Commons was characterized by both ministerial roles and periods of significant friction with his own party. In 2019, Prime Minister Boris Johnson removed the Conservative whip from Benyon after he voted against the government on an EU withdrawal motion. He remained an independent MP for several months before being appointed to the House of Lords in late 2020 as Baron Benyon.
Throughout his career, Benyon has navigated intense scrutiny regarding potential conflicts of interest. As a minister in DEFRA, he faced criticism from figures like George Monbiot over his personal fishing rights, and from Green Party MP Caroline Lucas regarding his refusal to criminalize the possession of the poison carbofuran. Despite these controversies, his influence has remained substantial, leading to his appointment as Lord Chamberlain of the Household by King Charles III in November 2024.
