In short: Riek Machar is a central figure in South Sudanese politics, known for his long-standing rivalry with Salva Kiir and his history of leading various rebel factions. From his early days in the SPLA to his multiple terms as vice president, his career reflects the volatile path toward South Sudan's independence.

Born in 1952 in Unity State, Riek Machar Teny Dhurgon trained as an engineer before joining the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) in 1984. His political trajectory shifted dramatically in 1991 when he broke away from SPLA leader John Garang to form the SPLA-Nasir faction. This split was marked by the Bor massacre, where his forces were involved in the killing of at least 2,000 Dinka civilians, an event that exacerbated ethnic tensions between the Nuer and Dinka groups.

Throughout the 1990s, Machar led a series of shifting militias, including the South Sudan Independence Movement and the South Sudan Defense Force. While he initially sought full independence for South Sudan—contrary to Garang's vision of a united, democratic Sudan—he later signed a peace agreement with the Khartoum government in 1997. By 2002, he had rejoined the SPLA, eventually becoming vice president of the autonomous Southern Sudan in 2005 and the independent republic in 2011.

Machar's relationship with President Salva Kiir has been defined by cycles of cooperation and violent conflict. Following the outbreak of war in 2013, he led the SPLM-IO rebel faction. Despite multiple peace agreements, including those in 2015 and 2018, his tenure as first vice president has been repeatedly interrupted by political instability and accusations of treason. As of 2025, he faces legal charges following an attack on a military base, highlighting the persistent fragility of South Sudan's political landscape.
