In short: Saudi Arabia is launching Riyadh Air, a massive second flag carrier designed to connect six continents. Beyond just flying passengers, this ambitious project aims to inject $20 billion into the country's non-oil GDP and generate over 200,000 new jobs.

Announced by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in March 2023, Riyadh Air is much more than a transportation company; it is a central pillar of Saudi Arabia's economic diversification. Owned by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) and led by CEO Tony Douglas, the airline is building a global network intended to reach over 100 destinations by 2030. The carrier's strategy involves a sophisticated digital backbone, including a partnership with FLYR to become the first native ONE Order network carrier and an agreement with Amadeus to enable personalized, dynamic pricing.

The airline's fleet is being assembled through a massive series of orders across multiple manufacturers. The planned lineup includes 60 Airbus A321neo aircraft, 31 Airbus A350-1000s, and a significant Boeing presence with 47 787-9 Dreamliners and 20 787-10 Dreamliners. To power its Boeing fleet, the airline secured 90 GE Aerospace GEnx-1B engines during the 2023 Paris Air Show. While the airline began testing operations with leased aircraft, such as a Boeing 787-9 from Oman Air, its first factory-new deliveries arrived in June 2026.

Riyadh Air is also aggressively pursuing global visibility through high-profile sports sponsorships. The carrier has become a prominent name in association football, serving as the shirt sponsor for Atlético Madrid and the official airline for CONCACAF. This expansion into the global market is supported by a web of cooperation agreements with major players like Delta Air Lines, Singapore Airlines, and Air France-KLM, positioning the Riyadh-based hub at King Khalid International Airport as a vital node in international aviation.
