The Metal God who found his voice after decades of silence and struggle.
In short: Rob Halford is an icon of heavy metal, known for his operatic range and leather-clad stage presence. Yet, for years, the Judas Priest frontman lived in the shadows of addiction and hidden identity. His journey from a quiet upbringing in Walsall to global stardom is a story of survival.
Born in 1951 in Sutton Coldfield and raised in Walsall, Robert John Arthur Halford joined Judas Priest in 1973. He became a defining figure in heavy metal, celebrated for his powerful falsetto and the leather-and-studs aesthetic he helped popularize. His career, however, was marred by the intense pressure of hiding his homosexuality, which he later described as a source of profound isolation and depression. This internal conflict fueled a cycle of substance abuse that nearly ended his life.
The turning point arrived in January 1986, when Halford entered rehab following a painkiller overdose. He has remained clean and sober ever since, crediting this recovery as the essential factor in his band's longevity and his own survival. Halford later revealed that his Christian upbringing became increasingly significant to him during his sobriety, providing a daily sense of grounding that he maintains to this day.
Halford publicly came out as gay during a 1998 MTV interview, an act he described as accidental but ultimately liberating. Despite initial fears that he would lose his fanbase, he found the metal community to be largely inclusive. Today, he remains a prolific artist, having been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. He continues to balance his life between the United States and his hometown, reflecting on a career that transformed him from a man hiding in the dark into the self-described stately homo of heavy metal.
