Robeson County: A North Carolina Crossroads Shaped by Revolutionary War History and Diverse Heritage
In short: Formed in 1787, Robeson County stands as a unique intersection of history, geography, and culture in southeastern North Carolina. Named for a Patriot colonel, the region has evolved from a colonial frontier and agricultural hub into a diverse community defined by its deep Indigenous roots and complex socioeconomic narrative.
Robeson County was established in 1787, carved from Bladen County to honor Colonel Thomas Robeson. A prominent figure in the American Revolution, Robeson was a leader of the Bladen Militia and a key participant in the Battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge. He is perhaps best remembered for his 1781 victory over Tory forces at the site known as the Tory Hole near Elizabethtown. Robeson died in 1785, leaving behind a legacy that remains tied to the county’s identity in the Sandhills region of North Carolina.
The region’s history is far older than its official county status. Indigenous people have inhabited the area for approximately 20,000 years, and today, the county is home to the Lumbee tribe. While early European settlement in the mid-18th century included English, French, and Scottish migrants—many of whom were Highland Scots—the demographic landscape has remained exceptionally diverse. Modern census data reflects this complexity, with a population that includes American Indian, White, African American, Hispanic, and multi-racial residents.
Geographically, the county is defined by the Lumber River, which bisects the area and has served as a focal point for settlement for centuries. Covering 949 square miles, the county serves as a major transportation hub, positioned at the intersection of I-95 and the future I-74. While the economy was historically driven by agriculture, timber, and naval stores, it has transitioned over time to include manufacturing, education, and health care. Today, the county seat of Lumberton remains the largest municipality, anchoring a region that continues to navigate its multifaceted past and present.
