In short: Before it was a global metaverse, the technology behind Roblox began as a simple software tool for simulating mechanical devices. Today, it is a massive economic engine that has navigated high-stakes lawsuits, international expansion, and complex debates over developer ethics and child safety.

Roblox Corporation was born from the work of David Baszucki and Erik Cassel, who first developed Interactive Physics in 1989. This early focus on simulation led to 'Working Model,' a software for mechanical devices, before they were acquired by MSC Software in 1998. After Baszucki spent several years as an executive there, he and Cassel founded Roblox Corporation in 2004. Their first project, DynaBlocks, launched in beta that same year before being renamed to Roblox in 2005 and officially released on September 1, 2006.

The company's growth has been marked by aggressive infrastructure and expansion moves. In 2018, they hired Dan Williams to transition from third-party cloud services to a proprietary one and acquired PacketZoom for network optimization. They also expanded globally in 2019, launching in Chinese, German, and French markets through partnerships like those with Tencent. By early 2021, the company achieved an estimated $41.9 billion valuation following its direct listing on the New York Stock Exchange.

However, this rapid scaling has faced significant scrutiny. The platform has been embroiled in numerous legal battles, including a $200 million copyright lawsuit from the National Music Publishers' Association (settled in 2021) and various class-action suits regarding 'bogus purchases' and third-party gambling. Most recently, in August 2025, the company faced intense backlash for issuing a cease-and-desist to a vigilante streamer who exposed online predators. This move triggered calls for the CEO's resignation, a lawsuit from the Louisiana Attorney General, and full blocks of the platform in countries like Qatar.

Despite these controversies, Roblox remains a dominant force in innovation and workplace culture, having been ranked as one of the most innovative companies in the world by Fast Company in 2020. It continues to balance its role as a massive commercial platform with the complex responsibility of moderating a space used by millions of minors.
