In short: From the art schools of London to the cult stages of America, Robyn Hitchcock has spent decades weaving a unique tapestry of surrealist lyrics and psychedelic melodies. His work, often described as sardonic and eccentric, has left an indelible mark on the landscape of alternative music.

Born in West London in 1953, Robyn Hitchcock’s musical journey began in the early 1970s. While studying at an art school in London, he was a member of the college band Beetles. After relocating to Cambridge in 1974, he performed as a busker and became part of several regional bands, such as B.B. Blackberry and the Swelterettes, the Worst Fears, plus Maureen and the Meatpackers.

In 1976, Hitchcock formed the neo-psychedelia band The Soft Boys, originally known as Dennis and the Experts. Their 1980 album, Underwater Moonlight, became a landmark release, earning a reputation as a major influence on American bands like R.E.M. and The Replacements. Following the group's 1981 breakup, Hitchcock launched a prolific solo career and formed The Egyptians in 1985, achieving further success with the 1988 album Globe of Frogs.

Hitchcock's songwriting is deeply rooted in the English surrealist comic tradition, often presenting an eccentric and sardonic worldview. His style has been shaped by the influence of Bob Dylan and the 1960s English folk music revival, filtered through a psychedelic rock lens. This distinctive approach has earned him a dedicated cult following and significant critical acclaim, even as he maintains a steady stream of diverse releases.

Throughout his career, Hitchcock has collaborated with a wide array of notable musicians, including Peter Buck of R.E.M., Gillian Welch, and David Rawlings. His work has spanned various formats, from solo acoustic albums like 1984's I Often Dream of Trains to documentary subjects, such as the 1998 film Storefront Hitchcock directed by Jonathan Demme.
