The engine that gave airlines the power of choice
In short: In a rare move for aviation, Boeing allowed airlines to choose between two different engine manufacturers for the 787 Dreamliner. This decision created a unique technical standard, ensuring that any aircraft could be swapped between Rolls-Royce and General Electric powerplants—a level of flexibility previously unseen in commercial flight.
Powering the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 functions as a high-bypass turbofan. While Boeing initially considered a sole-source agreement with General Electric, customer demand for variety forced a compromise. This resulted in a first-of-its-kind standard interface, allowing airlines to switch between Rolls-Royce and GE engines as long as the pylon is modified. This interchangeability makes the 787 a more flexible asset, as airlines can pivot to whichever manufacturer offers better performance for their specific operating profile.
The Trent 1000 is a 'more-electric' bleedless design, distinguishing it from other Trent family members. Instead of taking power from the high-pressure spool, it draws power from the intermediate-pressure spool. It features a three-spool layout with a bypass ratio over 10:1 and a 2.85 m fan. To manage the massive scale of the program, Rolls-Royce partnered with six companies—including Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries—who hold a 35 percent stake in the program.
The engine's history has been marked by both innovation and significant hurdles. In 2016, corrosion-related fatigue cracking in intermediate pressure turbine blades led to the grounding of 44 aircraft and cost Rolls-Royce at least £1.3 billion. In response, the company developed the Trent 1000 TEN and the subsequent XE series. The XE version, introduced in late 2025, features redesigned high-pressure turbine blades with 40% better cooling flow, aiming to improve time-on-wing by a further 30% and fully converting the fleet by late 2027.
