How a former Deloitte auditor became the ninth president of the Republic of Benin
In short: Romuald Wadagni spent nearly two decades navigating the global financial landscape as a high-level auditor before reshaping his nation's economy. From managing international debt to securing historic credit upgrades, his career culminated in a landslide presidential victory in 2026, marking a transition from technocratic finance to national leadership.
Born in Lokossa in 1976, Romuald Wadagni followed a path defined by rigorous academic and professional discipline. After graduating top of his class from the École supérieure des affaires de Grenoble, he joined Deloitte in 1998. His career spanned offices in Lyon, Boston, and across Francophone Africa, where he eventually became a partner at age 36. His expertise in IFRS and US GAAP conversion, combined with his work on complex IPOs and restructuring, provided the foundation for his later entry into public service.
Appointed Minister of Economy and Finance in 2016 under President Patrice Talon, Wadagni inherited a country burdened by debt. He prioritized fiscal consolidation and proactive debt management, earning international credibility that allowed Benin to access long-term financing at competitive rates. His tenure was marked by innovative financial operations, including the issuance of Africa's first Eurobond dedicated to Sustainable Development Goals in 2021 and an early debt redemption that saved the state approximately €55 million. These efforts were recognized by institutions like the IMF and rating agencies, with Moody's upgrading the country's rating in 2021.
Beyond finance, Wadagni’s influence expanded to include defense and international cooperation. By 2023, Benin achieved top-tier global rankings for budget transparency. Following President Talon's decision not to seek a third term, Wadagni secured the ruling coalition's nomination for the 2026 election. He won the presidency with roughly 94% of the vote and was sworn in on 24 May 2026. Today, he remains a figure defined by his transition from the private sector to the helm of the Beninese state, having been repeatedly named Finance Minister of the Year by Financial Afrik during his decade of ministerial service.
