In short: Rockville began as a humble rest stop for colonial travelers and evolved into a central seat of government and technology. Today, this Maryland city balances its deep historical roots with a modern identity as a core component of the Interstate 270 Technology Corridor, serving as a major regional hub.

The area surrounding Rockville has been inhabited for millennia, with Native American communities utilizing the local waterways as early as 8000 BC. By the mid-18th century, the site became a strategic stop on the Rock Creek Main Road. Known then as Owen's Ordinary, the location gained prominence when Major General Edward Braddock visited in 1755 during his mission to the western frontier. As the region grew, the settlement served as a vital courthouse for the newly formed Montgomery County in 1777.

Rockville’s development accelerated with the arrival of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1873 and subsequent trolley services in 1891. By the mid-20th century, the city underwent significant expansion, particularly after the 1949 annexation of the Twinbrook subdivision. During the Cold War, the city’s strategic importance was highlighted by its role in regional defense, featuring bomb shelters and Nike missile sites. However, the late 20th century brought challenges, as an ambitious urban renewal program in the 1960s resulted in the demolition of the original business district, a move that proved largely unsuccessful.

Today, Rockville is a key player in the Washington metropolitan area, anchoring the Interstate 270 Technology Corridor alongside Gaithersburg and Bethesda. The city hosts numerous biotechnology and software firms, including Bethesda Softworks. While the town center has seen various revitalization efforts since 2004, much of the city's economic activity remains concentrated along the Rockville Pike. With a 2020 population of 67,117, the city continues to blend its historic preservation, such as the 1880 West Montgomery Avenue Historic District, with its status as a modern, diverse suburban center.
