How a classical education and Persian roots reshaped American pop music
In short: Rostam Batmanglij left the heights of indie stardom to find a new sonic identity. By blending the long-necked Turkish saz with American pedal steel, the former Vampire Weekend producer is proving that the most compelling musical stories are often beautiful, unexpected hybrids.
For years, Rostam Batmanylij was a central architect of the Vampire Weekend sound. As a founding member and producer, he helped craft albums like the Billboard No. 1 'Contra' and the critically acclaimed 'Modern Vampires of the City'—the latter of which earned top honors from Pitchfork and Rolling Stone and won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. While his classical training at Columbia University provided a foundation in harmony and exactness, his solo work seeks a different kind of freedom.
His recent project, 'American Stories', explores the concept of musical hybridity. Batmanglij intentionally juxtaposes disparate traditions, such as the bluesy notes of a nylon-string guitar with the saz, a Turkish lute essential to Middle Eastern music. He views the history of American music as a series of intersections, noting that even the pedal steel—often associated with the American South—has roots as a Hawaiian instrument. This approach allows him to recontextualize sounds, much like his use of a sample from French composer Georges Delerue’s 1973 film 'Day for Night'.
This shift toward solo exploration followed a significant personal 'reset' at age thirty. After leaving the band in 2016 to move to L.A., Batmanglij transitioned from the structured role of a producer—where he feels an obligation to reach a finished conclusion—to a solo artist who prefers to 'get lost' in the process. His work now focuses less on definitive endings and more on the slow, wandering accumulation of new knowledge and spontaneous discovery.
