How India's first Netflix original series redefined global crime drama with local grit
In short: Sacred Games, an Indian neo-noir thriller, transformed the landscape of streaming by rejecting traditional Bollywood tropes for a gritty, multi-layered narrative. Based on Vikram Chandra’s 2006 novel, the series follows a troubled Mumbai police inspector and a notorious crime lord, proving that local stories can transcend borders through subtitles.
Development began in 2014 when Netflix vice-president Erik Barmack sought to create Indian content for a global audience. He approached director Vikramaditya Motwane, who saw the web-series format as a liberating departure from the rigid two-and-a-half-hour structure of Indian cinema. Motwane and co-director Anurag Kashyap adopted a dual-narrative approach, with Motwane filming present-day scenes in Mumbai and Kashyap capturing the 1980s underworld. This distinct stylistic split was essential to the show's identity, allowing the directors to explore the evolution of Bombay into Mumbai.
The series is noted for its deep integration of Hindu mythology, with episode titles and visual designs referencing ancient scriptures and the Indus Valley Civilization. This cultural specificity, however, presented challenges for international viewers unfamiliar with India’s complex religious tensions and caste systems. Despite this, the first season achieved critical acclaim, holding a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It remains the only Indian series featured on The New York Times' list of the 30 best international television shows of the decade.
Production was a massive logistical undertaking, spanning locations from Mumbai to Nairobi and Cape Town. The series was not without controversy; in 2018, legal complaints were filed alleging that the show insulted former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The situation was eventually defused after Rahul Gandhi publicly defended the show as a work of fiction. While the second season received a more mixed critical response, the series set a new benchmark for Indian production values, proving that global audiences were eager for authentic, non-English storytelling.
