A Bactrian princess became the most powerful woman in Alexander the Great's empire.
In short: Roxana, a Sogdian noblewoman, captured Alexander the Great's heart after he defeated her father in battle. Her marriage to the conqueror was both a passionate romance and a calculated political maneuver, yet her life ended in a brutal power struggle that ultimately extinguished the Argead dynasty’s royal line.
Born to the Bactrian nobleman Oxyartes, Roxana emerged from the rugged landscape of Sogdiana. Her life intersected with history when Alexander the Great invaded Persia. After the fall of the Achaemenid Empire, her family resisted the Macedonian forces from the Sogdian Rock. Following their defeat, Alexander reportedly fell in love with her on sight. They married in 327 BC, a union that served to pacify the restless Bactrian and Sogdian armies, though it faced significant disapproval from Alexander's own Macedonian companions.
Roxana’s influence grew as she accompanied Alexander on his Indian expedition. Tragedy struck in November 326 BC when their first-born son died in infancy near the Acesines River. Following Alexander’s sudden death in 323 BC, the political landscape turned lethal. Roxana, pregnant with the future Alexander IV, allegedly orchestrated the murders of Alexander’s other wife, Stateira II, and her sister, Drypetis, to secure her son's position. This period was defined by intense friction between Macedonian traditionalists and those supporting the legitimacy of the unborn heir.
The young Alexander IV was briefly recognized as king, but the stability was fleeting. By 317 BC, he lost his status amid court intrigues. Roxana and her son were eventually imprisoned in the citadel of Amphipolis by Cassander. Despite international condemnation and a 311 BC peace treaty that technically confirmed the boy's kingship, their fate was sealed. Cassander ordered their execution to eliminate the final claimants to the throne. They were killed in 310 BC, an act that effectively ended the Argead dynasty and marked the tragic conclusion of a life that had once reached the heights of imperial power.
