The Silent Service: a century of stealth and nuclear power
In short: From the first launch of Holland 1 in 1921 to modern nuclear-powered fleets, the Royal Navy's Submarine Service has mastered the art of undetected warfare. Known as the 'Silent Service,' these vessels operate in shadows, from the Mediterranean sieges of WWII to the crushing pressures of Arctic ice.
The service began in 1900 after Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering supplied five submarines to the Royal Navy. The first, Holland 1, was launched in 1921. By the start of World War I, the force had grown to 62 submarines, supported by 1,250 ratings and 168 officers. This era saw the introduction of large K-class steam-powered submarines, which were involved in the disastrous 'battle of May Island' during training exercises.
Technological evolution shifted the service toward nuclear propulsion. The first British nuclear submarine, Dreadnought, was launched in 1960 using a US-built reactor. This was followed by the Valiant class in 1966, which utilized a British-built Rolls-Royce PWR1 reactor. By 1968, the UK's strategic nuclear deterrent was transferred from the Royal Air Force to the Royal Navy, utilizing the Resolution class under the Polaris programme.
Today, the fleet consists of six Astute-class nuclear-powered fleet submarines (SSNs) and four Vanguard-class ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs). However, the service faces modern challenges. In 2023, Admiral Sir Ben Key noted a 'war for talent' due to recruitment difficulties. Furthermore, maintenance delays have significantly impacted operations; for example, the refit of HMS Vanguard lasted from 2015 to 2022, forcing other vessels into extended patrols of up to 205 days, compared to the previously planned 99 days.
Training remains notoriously rigorous. The 'Perisher' command course, run twice a year since 1917, has a historical failure rate of 25%. Those who fail are removed from sea duty and presented with a bottle of whisky, though they may remain in the Royal Navy within the surface fleet.
