In short: Roxette became global superstars not through traditional label marketing, but because a student brought their record to a Minneapolis radio station. This accidental breakthrough launched a career that sold over 75 million records, making them Sweden's second-best-selling musical act ever, trailing only the legendary group ABBA.

Formed in 1986 by Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle, Roxette emerged from the Swedish music scene with a sound that eventually defined late-80s pop. Despite their later success, the duo initially struggled to gain traction outside their home country. Their international breakthrough arrived in 1989 when Dean Cushman, an American exchange student, introduced their album Look Sharp! to a Minneapolis radio station. The resulting airplay for the single The Look triggered a massive, organic demand that forced EMI to finally market the band globally.

The band's commercial peak occurred in the early 1990s. Their 1991 album Joyride remains their most successful release, selling 11 million copies worldwide. During this era, they achieved four number-one singles on the US Billboard Hot 100, including the iconic It Must Have Been Love, which was famously featured on the Pretty Woman soundtrack. Their Join the Joyride! World Tour was a massive undertaking, reaching over 1.5 million fans across 107 concerts, cementing their status as a premier live act.

Roxette’s trajectory was not without challenges. By the mid-1990s, shifting American musical tastes toward grunge and alternative rock led to a decline in their US market presence. Furthermore, their relationship with EMI’s North American subsidiary fractured following controversial promotional tactics involving McDonald's. Despite these hurdles, the duo maintained a dedicated international following for decades. Following Fredriksson’s death in 2019, Gessle has continued the band's legacy, announcing a new tour for 2024 with vocalist Lena Philipsson.
