In short: In 1987, a group of young creators launched a project designed to break the 'Peter Pan syndrome' of animation. They didn't want to make something 'cute' or 'cool'; they wanted to create a work that forced viewers to confront the complexities of reality.

Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise was born from a 1984 proposal by Hiroyuki Yamaga and Toshio Okada. They argued that the anime industry had entered a 'cul-de-sac,' producing superficial content that reinforced the introverted tendencies of fans rather than connecting with them on a fundamental level. Their goal was to create a 'New Wave' of animation that would compel young people to reassess society and stop seeking escape in fictional tropes.

The production was a massive, chaotic undertaking. It was the debut for Studio Gainax and the first anime produced by Bandai, boasting a budget of ¥800 million (roughly $5.5 million in 1987). This made it the most expensive anime film to date, surpassing the records of Hayao Miyazaki's 'Castle of Cagliostro' and 'Castle in the Sky.' The project involved a collective approach that rejected standard anime motifs, leading to a visual complexity and a 'chaotic production' that ultimately failed to recoup its costs at the box office.

Despite its commercial failure, the film is now cited by science fiction writer Ted Chiang as one of the most impressive examples of worldbuilding in fiction. It served as a crucible for the creators; Hideaki Anno, who served as the chief mechanical designer, noted that the film's response had a profound personal and professional impact on him. Yamaga later observed that the very elements which caused the film's initial failure were the same factors that enabled the later successes of Studio Gainax.
