In short: Governor William Bligh arrived in New South Wales to curb corruption and end the military's monopoly on rum as currency. His rigid discipline triggered a mutiny by the New South Wales Corps, leading to his arrest and a year of confinement in the only military overthrow of an Australian government.

When William Bligh arrived as the fourth governor of New South Wales in August 1806, he found a struggling penal colony defined by food shortages and a lack of official currency. In this vacuum, rum imported from India had become the de facto medium of exchange. The New South Wales Corps, a military unit formed in 1789, had monopolized the importation and distribution of this commodity since 1792, effectively controlling the colony's economy to the benefit of its officers.

Bligh, a navy officer known for his role in the Bounty mutiny, was sent to restore order and dismantle these corrupt practices. He immediately clashed with powerful figures like John Macarthur, a former officer turned private citizen. Bligh’s attempts to regulate trade, prohibit the use of spirits as barter, and restrict large land grants threatened the lucrative interests of the Corps. His abrasive, uncompromising leadership style further alienated the military elite, who resented what they viewed as naval interference in their affairs.

The tension culminated on 26 January 1808, exactly twenty years after the colony's founding. Following a legal dispute involving Macarthur, Major George Johnston marched the Corps to Government House and arrested Bligh. Johnston declared himself lieutenant-governor, claiming he was ending Bligh's tyranny. Bligh remained under arrest for over a year, refusing to leave until he was eventually relieved by the arrival of Major-General Lachlan Macquarie in January 1810. Macquarie brought the 73rd Regiment to replace the rebellious Corps, finally restoring official government control.
