In short: Saanich is the most populous municipality on Vancouver Island, blending urban centers with rural landscapes and rugged coastlines. Named for the Saanich First Nation, which translates to emerging land or people, this district spans over 100 square kilometers, housing everything from vineyards to the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory's historic telescope.

Located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, Saanich serves as a major hub within the Greater Victoria area. Its geography is notably varied, featuring glacially scoured rock formations that rise from sea level to 229 meters. The landscape is a patchwork of urban, suburban, and rural zones, encompassing over eight square kilometers of freshwater lakes and nearly 30 kilometers of marine shoreline. This diversity allows for a unique mix of land use, ranging from dense residential neighborhoods to agricultural vineyards and hay fields.

The region's history of non-Indigenous settlement traces back to the 1840s, following the arrival of the Hudson's Bay Company. By 1852, Kenneth MacKenzie had established a farm for the Puget Sound Agricultural Company, leading to the construction of the Craigflower Schoolhouse, which remains the oldest surviving school building in Western Canada. The municipality itself was officially incorporated on March 1, 1906. Today, it is governed by a council consisting of a mayor and eight councillors, and it is divided into twelve distinct local areas for planning purposes.

Saanich is also a significant center for education and science. It hosts the northeastern portion of the University of Victoria and both major campuses of Camosun College. In the realm of astronomy, the district once held a world-leading position in 1918 when the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory installed a 180-centimeter reflecting telescope, which was the largest of its kind for several months. Despite its growth—reaching a population of 117,735 by the 2021 census—the area maintains a strong connection to its natural surroundings, including notable parks like PKOLS and the coastal beaches of Cadboro and Cordova Bay.
