How Season 14 of RuPaul's Drag Race Redefined the Competition and Its History
In short: The fourteenth season of RuPaul's Drag Race, which premiered in January 2022, broke numerous franchise records. From introducing the show's first heterosexual, cisgender male contestant to featuring a historic final five in the grand finale, the season pushed boundaries while awarding the largest cash prize in the series' history.
Season 14, which began airing on VH1 on January 7, 2022, drew 738,000 viewers for its premiere, marking the highest viewership for a season opener since Season 10. The competition featured 14 contestants and introduced significant structural changes, including the Chocolate Bar Twist. Starting in the third episode, contestants were given chocolate bars, with one containing a golden ticket that could save a queen from elimination. This mechanic remained in play until the twelfth episode, when it was revealed that Bosco held the golden bar.
The season was notable for its inclusive cast and historic milestones. It featured five transgender contestants: Kerri Colby, Kornbread 'The Snack' Jeté, Jasmine Kennedie, Bosco, and Willow Pill. Willow Pill ultimately won the competition, becoming the first transgender contestant to win the main franchise and the fourth overall across the entire brand. Kornbread 'The Snack' Jeté also made history as the first transgender contestant to be named Miss Congeniality. Additionally, the season included Maddy Morphosis, the first heterosexual, cisgender male to compete on the show.
The competitive stakes were higher than ever, with the winner receiving a $150,000 cash prize, the largest amount awarded in the show's history at that time. The runner-up, Lady Camden, also received a $50,000 prize, marking another series first. The season also saw a unique endurance test for contestants; Jorgeous became the first queen in the series to lip sync for her life five times, surviving four before being eliminated on her fifth attempt. The season concluded with a final five in the grand finale, a first for the franchise.
