How a single profanity became a global symbol of Ukrainian resistance
In short: On the first day of the 2022 invasion, a border guard's blunt refusal to surrender to a Russian cruiser went viral. What began as a heated radio exchange transformed into a powerful rallying cry, a commemorative postage stamp, and a weaponized piece of modern folklore.
The phrase originated on 24 February 2022, during the initial assault on Snake Island in the Black Sea. As the Russian flagship cruiser Moskva demanded the surrender of the island's 13 Ukrainian border guards, Roman Hrybov—believed to be the voice behind the response—delivered the now-famous retort: "Russian warship, go fuck yourself." While initial reports suggested the defenders had perished, it was later confirmed that Hrybov and his colleagues had been taken prisoner and were eventually released in a March 2022 prisoner exchange.
The slogan's impact quickly moved beyond the battlefield into the realms of culture and commerce. The Ukrainian postal service, Ukrposhta, released a commemorative postage stamp featuring a soldier gesturing at the cruiser, a design by artist Borys Grokh that won the Assiago Award for best designed stamp of 2022. The phrase even prompted legal battles, as Hrybov's family applied for a defensive trademark to prevent international clothing companies from profiting from the slogan's meme status.
The linguistic weight of the phrase has been noted by scholars and politicians alike. While some translations suggest a more literal, even more vulgar meaning in Russian, its utility as a tool of resistance is undeniable. It has been used by US Senators on the Senate floor and even echoed by railway dispatchers and tankers. The phrase's legacy was punctuated on 13 April 2022, when the Moskva itself was critically damaged by Ukrainian missiles and subsequently sank, an event Ukrposhta celebrated by releasing an updated stamp without the warship.
