How a former agricultural town became the Motor City of the Philippines
In short: Once a quiet town dependent on farming, Santa Rosa has transformed into a powerhouse of industry and commerce. Known as the Lion City of South Luzon, it now anchors the nation's automotive production and serves as a premier hub for business, technology, and suburban development south of Manila.
The history of Santa Rosa traces back to 1792, when it was emancipated as an independent municipality. For nearly two centuries, its identity remained rooted in basic agriculture and family enterprises. This changed dramatically during the 1980s, as the entry of both local and foreign investors catalyzed a rapid economic and social shift. By 2004, the town was officially converted into a city, and it has since emerged as the wealthiest city in Luzon outside of the Metro Manila region, recording an annual income of ₱4.99 billion as of 2022.
Today, Santa Rosa is frequently called the Motor City or Detroit City of the Philippines. This reputation is well-earned, as the city hosts major manufacturing facilities for automotive giants including Nissan, Toyota, and Mitsubishi. Together, these plants are responsible for 95% of the country's total automotive production. Beyond vehicles, the city’s industrial landscape includes massive operations for food conglomerates like Monde Nissin Corporation and The Coca-Cola Company, which maintains its largest Philippine plant within the city limits.
The city's growth is further supported by its strategic location along the South Luzon Expressway and the Cavite–Laguna Expressway. This connectivity has allowed Santa Rosa to evolve into a diverse commercial center, hosting townships like Nuvali and Greenfield City, as well as a growing BPO sector. Currently ranked 82nd globally for IT-BPO competitiveness by the firm THOLONS, the city continues to expand its infrastructure, including planned civic complexes and satellite campuses for major universities, cementing its status as a critical hub for South Luzon.
