The conservative leader who guided Finland through a historic geopolitical shift
In short: Sauli Niinistö was Finland's first conservative president since the 1950s. During his tenure, he navigated the nation through profound changes, culminating in Finland's historic accession to NATO in 2023, marking a significant departure from the country's long-standing tradition of political neutrality.
Between 2012 and 2024, Sauli Niinistö held the office of Finland's 12th President. Having studied law, his political career began leading the National Coalition Party (NCP) between 1994 and 2001. His political career included roles as Minister of Justice, Minister of Finance, and Deputy Prime Minister. Notably, he was the first Finn to make a purchase using euros on January 1, 2002. Prior to becoming president, he held the role of Speaker of the Finnish Parliament. He also held the position of honorary president for the European People's Party.
Niinistö's presidency was defined by significant shifts in Finnish foreign policy. For much of the Cold War, Finland maintained a neutral position, governed by a 1948 treaty with the Soviet Union that required it to repel attacks on the USSR through Finnish territory. However, Niinistö oversaw the country's accession to NATO in 2023, a major geopolitical transition. This shift ended a long period of maintaining a neutral political stance. This neutrality was previously reinforced by a treaty signed with the Soviet Union in 1948.
His electoral success was marked by strong public support. In the 2012 election, he defeated Pekka Haavisto with 62.6% of the vote in the second round. He secured reelection in 2018, winning in the first round with 62.7% of the vote. In a 2023 poll by MTV Uutiset, he was ranked as Finland's greatest president of all time. His victory in 2012 came after he ran as the candidate for the National Coalition Party. He successfully secured his mandate through a decisive second round of voting.
Born in Salo in 1948, Niinistö's connection to his roots remains visible; the Salo Sports Park is also known as Sauli Niinistön urheilupuisto. He previously managed his own legal practice in his hometown. Additionally, he served as a member of the municipal council in Salo for fifteen years.
