The Great Wall of India stands between the goal and defeat
In short: In the high-stakes world of international field hockey, one woman has become a literal fortress. Known as the 'Great Wall of India,' Savita Punia transformed from a reluctant student into the nation's most capped player, securing historic gold medals through sheer defensive willpower.
Savita Punia’s journey to becoming India's premier goalkeeper began in Jodhkan village. Despite an initial lack of interest in hockey, her trajectory shifted when her father invested Rs. 20,000 in her kit, sparking a serious commitment to the sport. She was mentored by coaches Sunder Singh Kharab and Azad Singh Malik at the Sports Authority of India center in Hisar, eventually qualifying for the national team in 2007 at just 17 years old.
Punia's career is defined by 'clutch' moments that shifted the landscape of Indian sports. In 2013, she saved two crucial goals during a penalty shoot-out against Malaysia to secure a bronze medal. By 2016, her heroics against Japan helped India qualify for the Rio Olympics after a 36-year hiatus. Her ability to withstand high-pressure 'barrages' of penalty corners has earned her the nickname 'India's lady in shining armour.'
Her impact culminated in major historical milestones. In 2018, she won the Arjuna Award, India’s second-highest sporting honor, and was named goalkeeper of the tournament at the Asia Cup for an astonishing save against China. Most recently, during the 2026 Asian Games gold medal match, she blocked a penalty stroke from Zhang Ying to clinch the Asiad gold for India after 44 years. For these contributions, she was awarded the Padma Shri in 2026.
Despite her accolades—including the Baljit Singh Goalkeeper of the Year award and a 1 lakh rupee cash reward—Punia’s career also highlights systemic hurdles. The disparity between athletic success and state backing became evident when she disclosed in 2016 her failure to obtain a position via the Haryana Government's 'Medal Lao, Naukri Pao' initiative.
