The strategic island that has been fought over for millennia
In short: Located where the Adriatic and Ionian Seas meet, Sazan Island is a 2.2 square-mile outcrop that has shaped history. From Roman warships to Cold War submarines, this rocky spit has been a prize for empires seeking to dominate the narrow Strait of Otranto.
Sazan Island's importance is a masterclass in how geography dictates destiny. Situated in the Strait of Otranto, the narrow channel separating Italy and Albania, the island has been controlled by a succession of powers, including the Romans, Venetians, Ottomans, British, and Italians. For centuries, possession of this small landmass was a prerequisite for controlling the Adriatic and its vital port cities, such as Venice, Dubrovnik, and Trieste.
The island's military history is marked by intense conflict and paranoia. In 1264, a naval battle between Venice and Genoa occurred off its coast. Later, during the interwar period, Italian forces built extensive defenses under Mussolini. During the Cold War, the island became a symbol of the repressive regime of Enver Hoxha, who ruled Albania from 1944 until 1985. Obsessed with potential invasions, Hoxha—with Soviet assistance—constructed a vast network of tunnels, barracks, and thousands of bunkers. This infrastructure served a dual purpose: defending against external threats and preventing Albanian citizens from fleeing the country.
Today, Sazan is undergoing a dramatic transformation from a military exclusion zone to an ecological sanctuary. Since the fall of the communist regime in the 1990s, the island has been reclaimed by nature. To safeguard the island's untouched ecosystems, Albania created the Karaburun-Sazan National Marine Park in 2010. This region now serves as a sanctuary for hundreds of flamingos, nesting Loggerhead turtles, and endangered Mediterranean monk seals, providing a sharp departure from its former heavily fortified state.
