In short: Commissioned to honor soldiers who defended Târgu Jiu in 1916, Constantin Brâncuși’s sculptural ensemble is a masterpiece of 20th-century art. Stretching along a west-to-east axis, the three-part installation serves as a profound meditation on infinity, transition, and the passage of time, recently recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The ensemble, inaugurated on 27 October 1938, was a labor of love for Brâncuși, who accepted the commission from the National League of Gorj Women but refused payment for his work. The installation consists of three distinct elements: The Table of Silence, The Gate of the Kiss, and the Endless Column. These sculptures are aligned along a 1.3-kilometer path, creating a unified narrative of remembrance for Romanian heroes of the First World War.

The Endless Column is perhaps the most iconic component. Standing 29.3 meters tall, it is composed of 16 rhomboidal modules, with the incomplete top unit intended to evoke the concept of the infinite. Brâncuși had explored this specific geometric form as early as 1918. The structure was engineered by Ștefan Georgescu-Gorjan and fabricated in the central workshops of Petroșani. While the column symbolizes infinite sacrifice, the other pieces offer different reflections: the Table of Silence, with its twelve hourglass-shaped seats, contemplates the nature of time, while the Gate of the Kiss serves as a symbolic portal to the afterlife.

The ensemble’s history reflects the turbulent politics of the 20th century. During the era of Socialist Realism, Brâncuși was dismissed as a proponent of bourgeois formalism, and the communist government even considered scrapping the column for metal. Following the 1989 revolution, the site underwent a major restoration between 1998 and 2000. This effort, supported by the World Monuments Fund and the World Bank, addressed severe structural issues including corrosion and foundation instability, ensuring the preservation of this national treasure for future generations.
