How a young archer without arms redefined the limits of human precision and strength
In short: Sheetal Devi, born with a condition that left her without arms, has become a global force in para-archery. By mastering the use of her legs to draw and release, she has shattered world records and secured major titles, proving that unconventional methods can reach the pinnacle of professional sport.
Born in 2007 in the Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir, Sheetal Devi was born with phocomelia, a rare condition resulting in the absence of upper limbs. Her journey into elite sports began in 2020 when the Indian Army's Rashtriya Rifles unit identified her potential during local outreach initiatives. They provided essential support, including medical assistance and education, eventually facilitating her enrollment at a specialized sports training facility managed by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. This environment provided the foundation for her rapid development as an athlete.
Her transition to archery was unconventional. Coaches Abhilasha Chaudhary and Kuldeep Baidwan, who had never worked with an armless athlete, looked to the techniques of archer Matt Stutzman for inspiration. They discovered that Devi’s childhood habit of climbing trees had granted her exceptional core strength, which became the engine for her shooting technique. Unlike traditional archers, she uses her legs and feet to manipulate the bow, a method that required intense adaptation since standard prosthetic assistance was deemed impossible by medical professionals.
The results were historic. Within 11 months of training, she dominated the 2022 Asian Para Games, winning two gold medals. Her trajectory continued at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, where she set a new world record in the ranking round with 703 points and secured a bronze medal in the mixed team event. By 2025, she reached the top of the world rankings, defeating the defending champion to become the first armless woman to win the World Para Archery Championships. In 2026, she continued her momentum by setting a new mixed team world record of 1400 points at the Ahmedabad leg of the World Archery Para Series.
Devi’s success has earned her significant recognition, including the 2023 Arjuna Award and multiple accolades from the World Archery federation. Her career demonstrates how specialized training and physical adaptability can overcome profound anatomical challenges, shifting the landscape of competitive para-sports. She remains a trailblazer, consistently proving that elite performance is defined by technique and determination rather than traditional physical norms.
