How a 1966 pioneer reclaimed its glory after a historic relegation
In short: For decades, Sharjah FC stood as a pillar of Emirati football, yet the club faced a sudden, shocking fall from grace. Discover how this legendary side navigated a period of mid-table decline and a historic descent to the lower division to eventually return to the top.
Founded in 1966 as Al Oruba Club, Sharjah FC has long been a cornerstone of the UAE football landscape. The club's early history is marked by significant milestones, including its 1974 merger with Al Khaleej to form Al Sharjah SCC and its relocation to Sharjah City. This era established the club as a powerhouse; in 1974, they became the first official champions of the UAE League after victories over Oman and Al Ahli. Their influence was so profound that by 1990, the club provided eight players to the UAE national squad, more than any other club at that time.
Despite a golden era spanning the 1980s and 1990s, the club's dominance was not permanent. The mid-2000s brought a period of instability characterized by consecutive mid-table finishes, culminating in the club's first-ever relegation in 2012. However, the club demonstrated resilience, securing promotion back to the top tier in 2013.
The modern era has seen a resurgence in trophy collections. After a long drought, the club secured its first league title since 1996 during the 2018–19 season, achieving this with only a single loss. Recent years have been even more prolific, including a 2022–23 League Cup victory and back-to-back President's Cup wins in 2022 and 2023. Most recently, in the 2024–25 season, the club achieved continental success by winning the AFC Champions League Two, becoming only the second UAE club to claim a continental trophy.
