Sheridan County is a vast, arid expanse of Nebraska with a unique aquatic geography
In short: Spanning over 2,400 square miles, Sheridan County is Nebraska's fourth-largest county by area. While its landscape is defined by rolling, dry hills, it hides a surprising network of small lakes and the Niobrara River, which carves an eastward path through the region's upper central territory.
Established on February 25, 1885, and named after General Philip H. Sheridan, this rural county sits along Nebraska's northern border, sharing a boundary with South Dakota. Despite its significant size, the region is entirely rural, with 100% of its population living outside urban centers. The geography is primarily characterized by arid, rolling terrain, though the eastern and southern sections are punctuated by small lakes, and the Niobrara River provides a vital waterway through the heart of the land.
The demographic profile of the county has shifted over the last two decades. By the 2020 census, the population had reached 5,127, with a median age of 46.7 years. This represents a decline from the 6,198 residents recorded in the 2000 census. The community remains predominantly White, though it maintains a notable American Indian and Alaska Native population, which accounted for 11.0% of residents in 2020. Economic and social structures are reflected in the 2,163 households counted in 2020, where roughly 25% of homes include children under 18.
Politically, the county has maintained a consistent conservative stance for decades. Since 1940, every presidential election has resulted in a victory for the Republican candidate. This trend was further highlighted in 1994, when Sheridan County and neighboring Garden County stood as the only two regions in the state that did not support the Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Ben Nelson, during his landslide victory. Today, the county continues to function as a distinct, sparsely populated rural hub, with Rushville serving as the county seat and Gordon functioning as its largest city.
