In short: Spanning nearly 6,000 square miles, Cherry County is the biggest county in Nebraska. This Sandhills region is so expansive that it exceeds the total area of Rhode Island, Delaware, and Connecticut. Despite its immense size, the entire population lives in rural areas, maintaining a distinct, sparsely populated landscape.

Established in February 1883, Cherry County was named to honor Lieutenant Samuel A. Cherry, an Army officer killed in South Dakota two years prior. The county is situated in the Nebraska Sandhills, a unique landscape shaped by the Pinedale glaciation. As the massive continental glaciers retreated during the Holocene, they left behind dunes that were eventually stabilized by grasses. This geography defines the region, which today borders 11 different counties across Nebraska and South Dakota, more than any other county in the state.

The county's scale is difficult to overstate. With a total area of approximately 6,010 square miles, it is larger than the individual states of Connecticut, Delaware, or Rhode Island. This vast territory is so spread out that it actually straddles two time zones: the eastern third, including the county seat of Valentine, operates on Central Time, while the western two-thirds follows Mountain Time. In 1911, a proposal to divide this massive landmass into smaller administrative units was soundly rejected by voters, with only three of the county's 42 precincts supporting the split.

Demographically, the county remains deeply rural, with 100% of its residents living outside urban centers. While the population has fluctuated over the decades—recorded at 6,148 in 2000 and estimated at 5,558 by 2024—the region maintains a consistent political identity. It has been a reliable stronghold for the Republican party for nearly a century; no Democratic presidential candidate has secured more than 40% of the local vote since 1948, and the county has not supported a Democratic nominee since 1936.
